Alice Davies is an important voice in contemporary circus. She is an artist who uses her discipline to question the body, the gaze and the world around her. In her latest exploration, Sustained, Davies moves slowly and attentively through and around a trapeze for sixty minutes. What unfolds is a quiet and suspenseful endurance test of hanging, floating, resting and beginning again. A hypnotic whole that makes the audience part of a restrained spectacle.
Alice Davies finds herself at the intersection of two desires: the wish to remain in motion, and the wish to stand still and listen. The desire to change, and the desire to hold on to the present moment a little longer. What at first seems almost motionless gradually transforms into a world of small shifts: breath, tension, surrender and control. Davies invites the audience to slow down together with her. To see more within that stillness. In this way, Sustained becomes a meditative quest for rest and connection, and a love letter to the trapeze — the apparatus in which Davies has already spent almost two-thirds of her life.
