Contortionist Alice Rende gives a voice to the outcasts in the mystical performance FORA. From within a cramped plexiglass box, where there is barely any room to move, she finds the space to tell a powerful story against oppression. With a nod to Houdini, traditional contortionist techniques, and a unique twist, Alice Rende delivers a stunning performance that not only breaks with conventional thinking but is also groundbreaking for the genre.
Alice Rende brings acrobatics and academic work together in remarkable performances. In her research, she focuses on our understanding of abnormality and the potential of ‘unusual’ bodies. FORA was developed through research among homeless people in Rio de Janeiro, psychiatric hospitals, and historical archives. Inspired by so-called ‘hysterical patients,’ she created a physical vocabulary that defies the usual conventions of flexibility.
